Sandwiched between the Himalayas and the Indian plains, our nursing programme is based in Bharatpur – an excellent base from which to explore this stunning country.
Bharatpur is the hub of the region and the busy hospitals attract people from all over the area. We enjoy a strong partnership with the government subsidised district hospital which can provide some fascinating nursing placements, and as most of our supervisors work in their own practices in the afternoon, there may also be the option of joining them to learn about private healthcare.
We understand that taking a placement in a developing country hospital can be a little daunting, so before you start our dedicated in-country team runs an extensive preparation programme. You will get a tour of the hospital, meet your placement supervisors and get a chance to discuss your aims and objectives with them. You will also be given a detailed breakdown of healthcare in Namibia, the role of the doctors and nurses within the hospital and what you may see or be involved with during your time in the country.
The Gap Medics house in Bharatpur accommodates up to 16 people in shared rooms with lots of space in the lounge and outdoor barbecue area to relax or brush up on the free Nepalese lessons. You are just a short walk or rickshaw ride away from your healthcare placement.
All meals are included during your placement and our live–in caterer will cook mouth-watering treats, as well as keep the fridge stocked with snacks and purified drinking water. The Chitwan team want this to be a home away from home, so will give you a local orientation on arrival and provide as much advice and support as you need to settle into Nepalese life.
Chitwan National Park is on Bharatpur’s doorstep, offering fantastic opportunities to spot endangered wildlife. Elephant safaris, dugout canoes and 4×4s can take you deep into the last protected areas of the region to spot one-horned rhinos, Royal Bengal tigers, leopards and rare Gangetic river dolphins.
Any trip to Nepal must include a visit to the Himalayas, and from Pokhara or Kathmandu you can arrange treks to Everest base camp or the Annapurna circuit. For those that do not want to trek, fast flowing rivers provide some of the best white water rafting and kayaking in the world.

There are lots of reasons to book with Gap Medics:-
- We have lots of experience. As the only UK company to specialise in medical gap year placements and with sister company Work the World successfully providing elective placements for university students for the last 4 years, we’ve proved we know our stuff! limit numbers. There will only be up to 12 students on each programme to ensure you are not working in hospitals overrun with travel volunteers.
- 24/7 UK and overseas support. We want you to feel safe, comfortable and confident so make sure we have staff that can support you whatever your needs.
- Genuine experience. This is not a charitable venture. Whilst we do provide considerable monetary support to the hospitals, and practice a strong ethical policy that supports local communities, each program is designed specifically so that students can gain genuine experience relevant to university applications and pre-clinical years at university.
- Fantastic destinations. We have chosen each destination for their clinical options, local atmosphere, access to transport links and potential for exploring!
- We offer an intensive placement preparation and local orientation so that you are well equipped to cope with living and working in a developing country environment.
- Large, comfortable student houses, complete with housekeeper and caterer, offer you a home away from home.
- We provide considerable monetary support to all the hospitals we work with.
- We are always available. Gap Medics is approachable and happy to answer questions – we will provide support from the moment gap year students pick up the phone until they return back home. We’re also happy to speak to your parents and answer their questions.
Aspiring nursing students with a real interest in the issues effecting global healthcare.
