Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and Palestine and its largest city in both population and area. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with literature on it dating back 3000 years. Reflecting both its wonderful charm and a cause of much conflict, Jerusalem is holy to the three main monotheistic religions of the world - Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The “Old City” of Jerusalem is less than 1 km2, and is home to various sites of key religious importance, among them the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Israeli Flag Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque. Whatever your views, even a short visit to this city is, without doubt, a most moving and spiritual experience.

Volunteer work opportunities for you in Jerusalem

Old City The first of its kind, Projects Abroad Jerusalem is working with Jewish and Arab schools and with a school that teaches both Jewish and Muslim children together in the same classrooms. Sadly, it is too late to change the views of the adult population of this conflicted land, each with their inerrant mistrust of their neighbours, but it is not too late to teach their children about harmony and peaceful coexistence, living side by side with people of other beliefs and backgrounds, instead of in fear.

As a volunteer in Jerusalem, you will have the unique opportunity, unlike any other volunteering project, to influence and develop the new generation of Israeli and Palestinian citizens. By being part of the children’s education and opinions, the new generation of Jews and Muslims can grow up without prejudice or fear of each other and live in a land without conflict and hostility.
